Before electricity was available to power toys, toy steam engines were actually used to power large boats as well as cranes and shovels. Later on they were often used in connection with Erector sets. Steam engines as toys date from about 1870 and were used until about 1930. One German, three Americans, and one British Company, (Mamod) were early producers of this toy.
