Some commercially made boats date as far back as the late 1800s; they were produced on a much larger scale during WWI and the decade that followed. The Bing Mechanical Toy Company of Nurenburg, Germany advertised the "Toys, Games and Dolls Book" edited by Joseph J. Schroeder Jr. showing a boat similar to the one pictured above in it's 1912 reproduction of the Sears Roebuck Catalog.
