Hopi Long-Haired Kachina - # NAK - 3 - $800.00ANGAK'China, or The Long-Haired Kachina, is 11 1/2 inches high. It was hand carved by Ralph Sekaquaptewa from Kykotsmori Villiage on the Hope Reservation. We purchased this kachina from him at the Indian/Lutheran Fair held in Mesa, Arizonia, in March of 1987. The Long-Haired kachina belongs to a group of kachinas often referred to as "Borrowed kachinas." These kachinas circulate through the pueblos from east to west and back again because of their popularity. The Hopi have many of these kachinas, some of whose origins are well known and others that are recognized as being borrowed but from unknown origins. The kachinas are borrowed because they appear to be able to bring rain or exercise other special powers. The Long-Haired kachina is a bringer of gentle rains and flowers. He appears in almost all of the pueblos from the Hopi to the Rio Grande. His songs are melodic and the dance is a beautiful one to see in the springtime and is a Hopi favorite. The dancers' long hair worn loose down the back resembles the falling rain with the eagle breast plumes rising like clouds above it. Many varieties of this kachina exist. - Information from the book "Hopi Kachinas" by Barton Wright. |
