Hopi Sun Kachina - # NAK - 1 - $800.00TAWA Kachina or The Sun Katchina is 11 1/2" high. It was hand carved by Ralph Sekaquaptewa from Kykotsmori Village on the Hopi Reservation. We believe Ralph was the son of one of the chiefs of the Hopis. We purchased this kachina from Ralph at the Indian/Lutheran Fair held in Mesa, Arizona, on March 8, 1987. The deity Tawa has a vast number of stories relating to its interaction with people as well as animals and monsters. yet the kachina form of this deity appears in the Mixed Dance as simply another of the average kachinas and does not appear in any major ceremonial events. The Tawa kachina is one of the group of miscellaneous kachinas known as the Sosoyohim Kachinas. This group of kachinas represents those kachinas that may be called upon depending on the specific need, desire, or choice. Each has a characteristic or an attitude which he brings to aid the Hopi. - Information from the book "Hopie Kachinas" by Barton Wright. |
